Real-life advice from a real-life recruiter

About

Hello to all of my new friends! My name is Jana Sharlow and I am the Director of Recruiting for Eat’n Park Hospitality Group’s Restaurant division.  I started off at Eat’n Park as a server while attending high school.  After a progressive career from hourly to management to District Manager – I worked my way up in the company while also obtaining an Associates degree in Business, a Bachelors degree in Marketing & Management and then finally an MBA with a focus on Strategy.

After years of experience managing and recruiting folks, I would like to share those experiences with you. It is my hope that some of you will learn from my experiences and take control of your future.

On a personal note, my passions are my family, traveling and learning. Currently, I am learning how to: fuse glass, speak French and one stroke paint.

Do you accept applications for students on work permit… and if so what is the age that they can put in a application

    • Hi Paulette,

The minimum age to work at one of our restaurants is 15. If someone is under that age of 18 they need to have a work permit. Let me know what other questions you may have.

      Happy Tuesday!

Do you have to hand in your application or can you do it online?

    • Hi Daniel,

To apply for an hourly position go to one of our restaurants closest to you and let them know that you wish to fill out an application. If you go to the restaurant on a weekday afternoon, the manager will most likely have time to give you an interview at the time. In order to apply for management please go to Eat’n Park’s web site at http://www.eatnpark.com/careers.asp to submitt your resume. Let me know if this helped. Thank you for asking.

    Jana,

Hello! I recently applied online for the Guest Relations Assistant position. I feel I’m a great match for the job, but I haven’t heard anything in two weeks. I fear what my resume and cover letter looked like on your end! For more control of that, I wanted to send an email with attachments or mail hard copies but that was unavailable and seems unacceptable these days.

I assume my materials can be removed by several HR steps before getting to someone as “high-up” and, more importantly, positive, forward thinking as you. So…

Please explain to me the Eat’n Park hiring process for corporate employees. Do you get to see every applicant before they are removed from the hiring process?

    Thanks.

    • Hi Doug,

Thank you for your interest in our Guest Relations Assistant position. Please feel free to send your resume and cover letter to me at jsharlow@eatnpark.com. As far as the recruiting process for corporate team members, I review all applicants for each position.

      Cheers!

hello. I currently work at the Monongahela EatnPark, I have been here for almost 4 years from dishwashing to cook. I really care about this company. I have had the opportunity to become a cover manager, but unfortunately I had to decline the offer at the time because of personal issues. I was wondering if there are any other management opportunities in other restaurants?

    • Hi Ricky,

Have you talked to your GM to let him know that you are now available to cover? You can also speak with your DM. He should be aware of the cover opportunities in the surrounding restaurants. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

    Hi Jana
I’m 15 and I live about a mile away from my closet eat n park and I plan on applying. I have done the research that I can apply at 15 yet I was wondering what my chances of getting a job there were at my age. Will I be looked down on for being so young or possibly even turned down?

    • Hi Savannah,

Thank you for being interested in Eat’n Park Restaurants. Yes you are correct we do hire 15 year olds. There are government polices on how many hours and what hours 15 year olds may work as well as what type of work they can do. Please go to to your local Eat’n Park and ask to speak to a manager. Let them know that you would like to fill out an application and what you are interested in doing. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

    • Hi Rebecca,

Please visit your local Eat’n Park and speak with the General Manager. There are government regulations regarding hours of work that must be followed for 15 year old team members. Given the hours of work regulations 15 year olds usually work in the greeter area.
